In the world’s history there have been momentous events that have influenced the quality of our lives. The signing of the Magna Carta is a good example. The Declaration of Independence is what makes America the greatest nation on earth. People decided that individual freedom is a right. Serving Kings, queens and dictators cannot be tolerated. The Declaration of Independence guides us and is important for the future of America and the world.
After battles with the British at Lexington and Concord the American militias were now in a war with the great British Army; however, they lacked leadership. In response, the Continental Congress organized the American militias together as the continental army and appointed George Washington as the commander in chief. George Washington and the continental army risked their lives fighting for your freedom.
The brave delegates in the second Continental Congress worked hard to pass the resolution for your independence and to get the colonies to work together as a united confederation. Americans must be united by what they share.
Not all Americans wanted independence from Britain. There were colonists that thought they were only fighting for better treatment from the King.
The Declaration of Independence informed Britain of the reasons for declaring independence and to prove the legitimacy and the righteousness of their cause. The preamble to the Declaration of Independence is a forthright statement defining people’s rights and freedoms. The Declaration of Independence defined the values that make America what it is today.
The Continental Congress sent a letter to King George explaining the reasons that the colonists were fighting the British. Not every American wanted independence from Britain. Not every colonist believed that they were only fighting for better treatment from the British king. John Dickinson, the representative for Pennsylvania wanted to reconcile with Britain instead of fighting for independence. He convinced Congress to send a petition to King George asking for peace and better treatment of the colonists. King George ignored his petition.
There were colonists who did not agree that America should be independent. They had their reasons. The Continental Congress debated all of them.
There were colonists who believed that it is a God given right to be independent. The King of Britain prohibited commerce with any other country. The King of Britain imposed a multitude of unfair taxes. The colonies came together to oppose the injustice of The Kings rule. The united colonies have the right to govern themselves with their own beliefs and principles.
Other colonists believed that as British citizens they should be loyal to the king. They needed the King’s leadership. Although their representatives were not elected, they believed they were represented. Their taxes are high; however, Britain provides protection.
The American people were beginning to accept the idea of independence seriously. John Adams represented Massachusetts in the Continental Congress. He argued against those who opposed independence. John Adams worked with Richard Henry Lee to pass a measure to declare independence from Britain. Richard Henry Lee ended the debate in the Continental Congress when the Resolution for Independence passed on July 2, 1776.
The Declaration of independence, to be legally accepted as correct, needed to define and clearly explain the justification for independence from Britain.
The Declaration of Independence begins with “WE HOLD THESE TRUTHS TO BE SELF EVIDENT, THAT ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL, THAT THEY ARE ENDOWED BY THEIR CREATER WITH CERTAIN UNALIENABLE RIGHTS, THAT AMONG THESE ARE LIFE, LIBERTY, AND THE PURSUIT OF HAPPINESS.”
